James Whelan of Belleville, N.J., passed away at his home on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, surrounded by his loving family, at the age of 90.

Born in 1921 in Clonad, Portlaoise, County Laois, Ireland, Jim joined the Irish National Army at the age of 16 and served for seven years, leaving with the rank of battalion sergeant major. He then served with the Irish Republican Army for three years. He immigrated to the United States in 1949 and moved to Belleville, N.J., in 1957.

Mr. Whelan retired from the Prudential Insurance Company after working for 36 years. Jim was a member of the Four Provinces Club; McGovern Association; the Irish-American Association of Kearny, N.J.; Eire Nua; the Gaelic Football Club of Newark, N.J., and the St. Brendan's Irish-American Association. He served as the grand marshal of the 1986 West Hudson St. Patrick's Day Parade. He was a current member of St. Peter's Church, the Belleville Knights of Columbus Council 835, the Belleville Irish-American Association, and the Nutley Irish-American Alliance.

Jim was predeceased by his wife, Mary (Dempsey) of Portlaoise and Mallow, County Cork, Ireland, in 2000; his parents, Julia and Joseph, and his siblings, Joe, Jeremiah, Elizabeth and Winnie.

Jim is survived by his children, Margaret (Robert) Yani, Julia (Anthony) Wieners, James (Julie Pasqual) Whelan, Susan Whelan, and Patrick (Rose) Whelan; also surviving are his beloved grandchildren, Michael and Kaitlin Wieners, Sarah and Meghan Yani, and James, Joanna and Jaclyn Whelan, and his nephew, Paddy Whelan, who resides in Portlaoise, Ireland. Our sincere thanks to our friend and his caretaker, Gloria.

To his extended family and friends here, and those who remain in Canada and Ireland, he would say, "Until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand."

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Peter's Church food pantry, 155 William St., Belleville, N.J. 07109.
